Other food supplies kept in the root cellar over the winter months included onions, preserves and jams, salt meat, and salt fish, reflecting traditional root cellar structure.
Today, many of Twillingate’s more than 234 root cellars are still in use, while others stand as cultural landmarks, reminding visitors of the resilience of those who depended on them for survival, including examples highlighted at the Troy Mitchell Root Cellar Site.
