Picking Adventures
A Delicious Newfoundland Tradition
Fresh Flavors From Nature
Berry picking in Twillingate is a time-offered tradition for locals and visitors alike. Throughout summer and fall, the landscape bursts with an abundance of wild berries, including blueberries, partridgeberries and bakeapples (cloudberries)
Fill your pockets with these sweet treats as you walk along Twillingate’s many trails or spend an afternoon picking. Many locals fill their freezers for the winter months and use the berries to make jams, pies, and traditional Newfoundland desserts, preserving the flavours of Twillingate long after the season ends.
Berry picking is more than the harvest - it’s a way to connect with nature and experience the island’s rich foraging heritage. Early summer is the time to harvest rhubarb, a sweet, sour plant stem reworked into jams, relishes and pies. Soon thereafter, in July, it is strawberry season, and the delicious ones do not grow wild but in the garden.
